Can't find a LAN game in Civilization V? Here's a way to fix that for windows 7/8

Sid Meier's Civilization V, an amazing turn based strategy game developed by Firaxis Games, was released on Windows September 2010, and then on Mac in November 2010. Two years later the first expansion pack, Gods & Kings, was released in June 2012. A year after that, the second expansion pack, A Brave New World, was released in July 2013. However, it faced some problems, including not being able to find LAN games, which is what we'll we talking about.

You see this problem first appeared for my brother and I a while ago when playing. After wiping my brothers laptop due to a blue screen error, we re-installed Civilization V and played on a LAN server hosted by myself. After a while, we lost the ability to see any LAN games. Of course I consulted various forums trying to fix it, but to no avail. The few ways I tried included making sure Civ. was allowed in firewall, re-installing, using third party programs to join LAN games, etc. Still I couldn't find the solution until today. I read something about homegroups and something about it affecting LAN games in Civ. I noticed my laptop and his weren't in a homegroup and so I had to connect his Windows 8 laptop to my Windows 7 homegroup. Sounds simple right? Wrong.
